Scania R620 - Käppeli
This Scania R620 is part of the fleet of Käppeli Logistik from Sargans (CH).
It's a Scania from the 1st R-series that is equiped with the 620hp version of the 16-liter V8 engine. These pictures are already a bit older, as in the meantime they installed a heavy duty drawbar at the front plate. This way it can also push other transports.
It's an 8x4 tractor with a very short wheelbase, ideal for this mountain rich region in Switzerland. The free space on this side was filled with a storage box.
With the short wheelbase there isn't much room left for components, so most where placed in a tower behind the cab.
In the tower we see the dieseltank and a toolbox at the bottom. Above that are the batteries and the hydraulics tank. To the left there is an additional radiator for the engine, to keep the water cool during heavy usage. Also the heat from the torque converter with integrated retarder gets cooled via this system, as those components transfer their heat into the cooling system via a heat exchanger..
The Scania is used with this Faymonville 2-axled jeep-dolly, a solution that often offers a bit more manoeuvrability.
This Scania was converted by Laxa in Sweden. They installed the ZF WSK440 with Ecosplit transmission. Normaly those where installed into the trucks with long wheelbase, but they also built 2 of these identical short wheelbased versions. Laxa also installs the tower behind the cab and the pusher axle, the base truck was a 6x4 tractor unit.
This side couldn't be photographed so well. On top of the tower we see a collection of air barrels. At this side of the truck, the raised exhaust is standing between the cab and tower.
The jeep-dolly is combined with a 4-axled low-loader from Faymonville. With this combination, most machines from the Käppeli construction department can be transported.
A nice combination in a striking color scheme!
