Samoter 2011 - Astra 66.54
The Samoter is a construction exhibition that takes place every 3-years in Verona. Click here for the 2008 edition.

At the stand of Astra, this impressive heavy transport tractor could be seen.

The type of the tractor is HD8 66.54. This means that it has a 6x6 drive and is equiped with the 540 hp Iveco Cursor enginge.

Here we have a better view from the side. The sleeper cab of Astra is a rare model, as most Astra's are ordered with daycabs for construction work.

The tractor will be used for heavy transports. Therefore it is equiped with a ZF Ecosplit gearbox that has a WSK440 torque converter mounted in front of it. The extra cooling that is needed for this, is mounted in the tower behind the cab.

Here another shot of the tower. There are 2 coolers, 1 for the engine and 1 for the torque converter/retarder. Underneath these coolers there is a heat-exchanger that also is part of the gearbox/retarder cooling system.

The truck is solled to the company Vernazza from Argentina. Apparantly the streets over there aren't always paved, as the truck is standing on Pirelli 14.00 R20 tyres for off-road use.

The space between the chassis at this side was filled with a dieseltank with an integrated stairs.

For really heavy transport tasks, up to 250 tonnes is possible, a heavy endplate was mounted at the rear of the chassis. The coupling that is mounted to it, is a heavy version that is made by Astra.

The normal chassis is fitted with a rather heavy support frame on which the fifth wheel is mounted. The fifth wheel is a Jost JSK50, good for a vertical load of 50 ton!

The truck has 2 rear axles that can carry a load of 16 tons, which means the tandem handels 32 tonnes. The front axle can take 8 or 9 tons, depending on speed and tyres. The free space at the chassis on this side was used to mount another dieseltank, aswell as the battery compartment and some air barrels.

This side of the towers houses 2 spare tyres and a suitable small crane.

This mighty machine can also be used as a pusher of transports. Behind the red & white steel cover, a similar drawbar is mounted like at the back of the chassis.
